So, just what is Good Ground Communications?
Hello, my name is Eric Walker and my story begins just a few short years ago. It was the Spring of 2010. I believed then, as I do now, that Jesus’ coming can’t be far away, and in my heart I felt a growing desire to be found on the front lines when He returns.
It started with China. After 25 years of local church ministry, God began to speak to me about taking the love and message of Jesus to the people of Communist China. I had an opportunity to go for 6 weeks with a group that used teaching English as a tool of relational evangelism. But I was struggling. It seemed like such a huge step!
As I wrestled with my decision, God kept leading me back to the story of Abraham found in Genesis 12. He left the only home he had ever known, Ur of the Chaldees, and went out “not knowing where he was going.” That’s just how I was feeling. Armed with only a promise of God’s abiding presence and blessing, Abraham left everything that was familiar, to brave the great unknown. Awesome. And so it was that, in the midst of my struggle, there was Abraham at every turn, challenging me with his unwavering faith.
I wish I could say I surrendered in fairly short order, but the fact is my indecision continued for several weeks. Though I wanted to be like Abraham, in retrospect, I guess I was a little more like Gideon. What I wanted most was a clear message from God.
Then it happened. One day as I was driving in my car, my cell phone rang. (Yes, I answered it!) It was a pastor friend of mine; Bill Patterson. We hadn’t talked for over six months, so we played catch-up for a bit.
Then came the reason for his call. “Eric,” he said, “I have a problem I hope you can help me solve.” “I will if I can,” I said. He continued, “I’m having trouble finding the right music to support this Sunday’s message and since you’re a worship pastor….”
“What are you preaching about?” I asked. “Well Eric,” he said, “I’m preaching from the passage in Genesis 12 where it talks about how Abraham went out not knowing where he was going…”
And without skipping a beat (and as my jaw slowly dropped), Bill immediately began to read aloud, over the phone, the very passage from Genesis that I had been meditating on for several weeks! As he finished, I could barely breathe. I mean, I’d heard of “the calling of God,” but I’d never experienced such a literal interpretation! Despite my doubt and indecision, in the midst of my struggle, God stopped just long enough to call me on the phone. Awesome.
Today I’m the founder of Good Ground Communications and I travel regularly to China, Africa and the Middle East. God has challenged me to boldly share the message of Jesus Christ with those who haven’t heard, mostly in the region of the 10/40 Window. Another important part of my ministry is to offer support and encouragement to full-time Christian workers. And when I’m stateside I speak to churches and Christian organizations, challenging others to consider “answering the call.”
It Could Happen
So, how about you? Are you ready to change the world?
How can I sufficiently challenge and inspire you, and others like you, to step up, to boldly go, to serve, to join in the amazing work that God is doing all around the world? This is the question that keeps me up at night!
Who Me? You’ve got to be kidding! Well, it happened to Abraham. And it happened to me. God called. It could happen to you too. That’s what Good Ground Communications is all about.
